Partners, related efforts and background information

Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis Laboratory (University of Minnesota): Conducts research on monitoring water quality of lakes and rivers and mapping land cover with digital images from earth-observing satellites at local, state, and regional scales.

Water Resources Center (University of Minnesota): Provides leadership in freshwater management through cutting-edge research, educational opportunities for students and professionals, and community outreach.

Water Council (University of Minnesota): Brings together resources from across the University of Minnesota to address the pressing concern of access to clean water for the 21st Century.

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency: Protects Minnesota's environment by monitoring environmental quality and enforcing environmental regulations.

Citizen Lake Monitoring Program: A network of citizen volunteers, coordinated by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, collecting data on hundreds of lakes statewide in Minnesota.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources: The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources works to integrate and sustain the interdependent values of a healthy environment, a sustainable economy, and livable communities.

LakeFinder: A Minnesota DNR online tool that finds and displays detailed information about most lakes in Minnesota. Information includes fishing regulations; location; water access sites; lake maps; lake reports on stocking, ice in/out, fish consumption; and water quality, including lake clarity from our LakeBrowser.

Watershed Health Assessment Framework: The WHAF app developed by the Minnesota DNR provides an organized approach for understanding natural resource conditions and challenges and identifying opportunities to improve the health and resilience of Minnesota’s watersheds. Read more about the WHAF.

NASA: The NASA Earth Science Program supports research and development of satellite remote sensing of Earth resources and environment.

NASA Landsat Science: Information on Landsat history, images, and Landsats 7, 8 and 9

NASA Earth Observatory: Award-winning NASA website and outlet, published weekly, with images, stories and information on the environment and climate. Includes collections of images by topic with many comparing changes over time. Sixteen global maps derived from NASA satellite data provide a global view of what’s happening on our planet and changes from month to month of key parts of Earth’s climate system.

USGS Landsat Program: Provides information, image collections, and downloads of Landsat data ̶ the world's longest continuously acquired collection of space-based moderate-resolution land remote sensing data.

European Space Agency (ESA) Sentinel Program: The constellation of Sentinel satellites provides data for monitoring and analysis of Earth’s resources and environment.

United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): The EPA develops criteria for ambient water quality that accurately reflect the latest scientific knowledge on the impacts of pollutants on human health and the environment. The EPA is currently studying innovative technologies that measure nutrient pollution in the water using remote sensing.

North American Lake Management Society (NALMS): A non-profit organization that forges partnerships among citizens, scientists, and professionals to foster the management and protection of lakes and reservoirs for today and tomorrow.

AquaWatch is an initiative within the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) that aims to develop and build the global capacity and utility of earth observation-derived water quality data, products and information to support water resources management and decision-making.
