Biography

Patrick Brezonik is professor emeritus of environmental engineering. Trained as an aquatic chemist, his research has focused on improving understanding of major water quality issues, such as eutrophication, acid rain, and biogeochemical cycling of mercury and other heavy metals. He is the senior co-author of a water chemistry textbook (2nd edition published in 2022 by Oxford University Press), sole author of a monograph on aquatic chemical kinetics, and author/co-author of numerous technical articles. He served as Director of NSF’s Environmental Engineering Program from 2004 to 2007. As director of the University of Minnesota's Water Resources Center (1985-2003), he led the establishment of the graduate program in Water Resources Science. He has researched remote sensing applications to measure the water quality of lakes and rivers since 1997.
